Announcements, Development, & Planning

  • Great baseball is coming out of North Lenoir High School for three years in a row.  The Hawks placed runner ups for the class AA state championship.  For the passed two years they were state champions.  Go Hawks!
  • A new $2.5 million fire station to be built adjacent to the corner of Vernon Avenue and East Street near downtown. The new station will replace the current facility located on King Street in the Kinston City Hall. The total project includes renovation of the existing fire truck bay at City Hall into additional office space for the Kinston police department.
  • Craig Hill, principal of Kinston High School has been named the 2007 Wachovia Principal of the Year for the state of North Carolina by the state Department of Public Instruction, the Principals' Executive Program and Wachovia Corp. The honor was given at a state luncheon in Raleigh.  Hill says everyone at KHS has a part of this honor. Hill said "I have the support system in place to make the school the best it can be and I've accepted this award on behalf of the entire school."
  • Woodington Middle School has been selected as one of the First Place Winners in the 2006 National Live It! School of the Year Competition. The Woodington Raiders were recognized for their dedication in promoting physical activity and healthy eating throughout their school. As winners they will receive $500 to continue promoting their Live It! Program.
  • Jimmy Smith, athletic director at South Lenoir High School has been selected by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association to be one of the winners of this year's Homer Thompson Memorial "Eight Who Make a Difference"
    Award because he exemplifies the qualities of sportsmanship and citizenship
  • Joetta Cox of Kinston was selected to be honored by the USA Weekend Magazine for her work during the 2006 “Make a Difference Day”. Cox’s work at the Friends of the Homeless Shelter qualified her for the honor. “Make a difference Day” is the nations’ largest day of volunteering and is a sponsored by USA Weekend.
  • The Lenoir County JobLink Career Center was awarded Level 3 status, which is the highest recognition for JobLink Centers in North Carolina. Lenoir County is the first county in the Eastern Carolina region to achieve this status.  Representing the area’s major workforce agencies JobLink provides comprehensive employment and training services for job seekers, training seekers and employers in a convenient, one-stop career center. 
  • Congratulations to Craig Hill, principal of Kinston High School!  Mr. Hill was presented the 2007 Wachovia Principal of the Year Award for the Southeast Region.  The presentation took place at the Northeast Region and Southeast Region Awards Luncheon at the Hilton in Greenville. There were 12 nominees from the following school systems in the Southeast Region:  Brunswick County, Clinton City, Craven County, Wayne County, Onslow County, Duplin County, Sampson County, Carteret County, Pender County, New Hanover County, Jones County, and Lenoir County.
  • Carla Batchelor, 7th grade math teacher at Savannah Middle School was selected to receive the Katharine Hodgin Award for Mathematics Teaching Excellence (Middle School) for the 2005-2006 school year.  This award, presented by the Center for Science, Mathematics, and Technology Education (CSMTE) at East Carolina University, honors a teacher in our 26-county service area who has exhibited excellence in mathematics teaching, innovative approaches to mathematics instruction and professionalism within and beyond the classroom.
  • The KHS Vikings had a season of 29 wins! Throughout the year the talented players performed with great team sprit, thus, caring on a rich tradition of great basketball in Lenoir County. the team advanced to the state finals in triple A High School basketball. After a tough game the Kinston Vikings placed second in the State Championship for 2007 but first in the hearts of the people of Lenoir County.
  • Want to know what’s happening in Lenoir County?  The Chamber of Commerce introduced a new Community Calendar to their website.  The public is invited to post events and happenings at www.kinstonchamber.com.  Organizations can refer to the calendar when choosing a date in an effort not conflict with other events.
